Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) measures the diffusion of nanoparticles in solution and computes the hydrodynamic diameter using knowledge of the solvent properties and the Stokes-Einstein relationship. DLS rapidly provides information on the size and aggregation state of nanoparticles in solution.

At nanoComposix, DLS measurements are performed on Malvern Zetasizer Nano ZS instruments equipped with a HeNe laser operating at 633 nm and a back-scattering detector at 173 degrees.

Sample Concentration Chart

Particle size Min. Concentration (Recommended) Max. Concentration (Recommended)
< 10 nm 0.5 g/l Only limited by the sample material interaction, aggregation, gelation etc.
10 nm to 100 nm 0.1 mg/l 5% mass (assuming a density of 1g/cm3)
100 nm to 1 µm 0.01 g/l (10–3 % mass) 1% mass (assuming a density of 1 g/cm3)
> 1 um 0.1 g/l (10–2 % mass) 1% mass (assuming a density of 1 g/cm3)

* Table taken from the manuals for Zetasizer Pro, Ultra, and Nano ZS series. Modeled on Polystyrene Latex (1 g/cm3) and will scale proportionally with nanomaterial density.
